Not that heavily modified. And the mods will end up on a special edition Chiron sooner or later anyway

“Not that heavily modified” means like a lowering kit and some driving lights. This car has an engine tune, rollcage, c ustom aero kit, and bespoke tires created specifically for the record attempt.

Right, but the only thing that might not carry over to a special edition is the roll cage, and that’s safety reasons. I don’t begrudge that.

This is Bugatti. If they want to change the customer $25k for each bespoke tire, then can and will, and Bugatti customers will pay

Roll cage wouldn’t do anything for performance- if anything, the extra weight would make it slightly slower. The remap? Thats a really common modification. If it wasn’t for the UK’s crazy car insurance, I would have remapped my 525d- it’s only £300 at a reputable local BMW specialist. Bespoke tyres? The standard Chiron tyres are pretty bespoke anyway- good luck getting tyres for a Chiron at NTB. And the aerokit? Thats just new bumpers really.

I bet many customers already have the special tires, even if they’ll never get remotely close to the top speed.

It also only did it in one direction, which means it’s not official. Official speed record runs need to be done in both directions within a matter of minutes of each other in order to negate any potential tailwind assistance.

When a 300 mph spec Chiron hits the streets (without a limiter), then it will be a 300 mph car. But saying “Yeah dude, it’s totally the fastest car on the road after just a few mods” is not cool when you’re already paying $3,000, 000 for a car. Also, I think Bugatti tuners are a little harder to find than BMW tuners.

That is pretty amazing when you think about it. In the late 80’s a 959 or F40 would barely go 200.

It has been verified by the TUV (German DMV)

Verification just means the TUV independently confirms the vehicle hit that speed, it doesn’t make it an official record. There are specific written rules that speed record attempts must follow to be made official, and that includes having to run in two directions. The official record is the average of the top speed from the two runs. This, as I said, is to negate any wind/gravity effects. Otherwise manufacturers could wait for a windy day, drive in the direction the wind is blowing, and get a speed boost. Or do it on a road that’s angled slightly downhill. By making them turn around and do it the opposite direction they then have to fight against anything that may have helped them the first direction.

If you don’t believe me, watch the Top Gear segment on the Veyron Super Sport’s record run. James and Jeremy specifically say that it has to be done in both directions. Skip to 4:45 if the video doesn’t go there automatically.

The video of the Koenigsegg record run also shows them going both directions in order to make the record official.
